Music: Washed Out - My Summer Obsession

Washed Out, has been my obsession this summer. The music feels like it's playing in the background of every adventure I take. Super chill, and chocked full of organic melody these tracks are my soundtrack right now. Ernest Greene, the mind behind Washed Out seeks out forgotten instruments and sounds to create the true essence of being "washed out". Maybe you'll get it.

Jealous of this guy ^

Check out this documentary following Ernest Greene through the development of Washed Out's new album "Paracosm".

Music: What I'm Likin'

(Brick + Mortar) Just bought the new album. Love the sound from these guys. "Bangs" sounds tough, but has hints of a melodic sweetness that gives a unique perspective. The rest of the album is fantastic. "Heatstroke" and "Keep This Place Beautiful" both have a raunchy realness to them.

(Kings of Leon) Glad to see these guys are getting their shit back together and putting out good music again. My first thought after hearing this single was, "This must be Caleb (lead singer) telling his band to wait for him while he works his demons out". Classic KOL sound.

(Half Moon Run) Discovered these guys sifting through iTunes releases. I enjoy. Cool video.

(Phosphorescent) This track is simple enough, but hits on a deep level. Lyrics like, "Some say love, is a burning thing...but I know love as a fading thing, just as fickle as a feather in a stream". It's humbling to hear lyrics describing love as such a painful thing.

Niangua River - July 2013

Camped along the Niangua River outside of Lebanon, MO. Beautiful area, but we were hit with heavy rain nearly the entire day of canoeing.

Kayaking Lake Jacomo

Went kayaking on Lake Jacomo for a few hours with dad. Did some fishing and exploring of the smaller creeks feeding the lake.

North Fork of the White River

Spent a few days on the North Fork of the White River in southern Missouri this year. Put together a short video with clips from my Kodak Underwater 1080p video camera, and Joe's GoPro HD.

Inspiring Lyrics - "Let Her Go" by Passenger

Let Her Go by The Passenger on Grooveshark
 Passenger - "Let Her Go"

A friend of mine (thanks J) gave a heads up about this band. I haven't dug too deep into their library of tracks or fallen in love with the rest of the album, but one particular song really stood out.

Let me post the lyrics...

Well you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go

Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low
Only hate the road when you’re missin’ home
Only know you love her when you let her go

And you let her go

Staring at the bottom of your glass
Hoping one day you’ll make a dream last
But dreams come slow and they go so fast

You see her when you close your eyes
Maybe one day you’ll understand why
Everything you touch surely dies

But you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go

Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low
Only hate the road when you’re missin’ home
Only know you love her when you let her go

Staring at the ceiling in the dark
Same old empty feeling in your heart
’Cause love comes slow and it goes so fast

Well you see her when you fall asleep
But never to touch and never to keep
’Cause you loved her too much and you dive too deep

Well you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go

Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low
Only hate the road when you’re missin’ home
Only know you love her when you let her go

And you let her go
And you let her go
Well you let her go

’Cause you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go

Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low
Only hate the road when you’re missin’ home
Only know you love her when you let her go

’Cause you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go

Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low
Only hate the road when you’re missin’ home
Only know you love her when you let her go

And you let her go...

It's not too hard to figure out what this song is about.

Feeling disillusioned after pursuing a conquest which left you to realize the grass isn't greener.

The theme of these lyrics hit close to home. After all; I'm unsettled, a landloper, a vagabond. Having an in the moment experience pertaining to everyday life events hasn't always been so easy. Wondering what is happening just over the horizon makes for a fantastical and imaginative thought pattern. Feeling content wrapped in the responsibilities of life doesn't exactly mesh with a psyche that moves in one direction. Forward.

I get these lyrics.

The music video helps add some visual to an already great song. I'm def. digging the nostalgia.

Lost? Sounds good.

I'm going to work on finding myself...by loosing myself.

There's something about planning for an adventure that keeps a mind from melting. The mundane nature of a "time clock" lifestyle all but scares the shit of me. Maybe it's the atheist inside, or maybe its that I've got so much catching up to do.

I'm not exactly Dick Proenneke, but I get it. Capitalism breeds a kind of false contentment that feeds a hidden depression. Society is really good at grabbing our attention. My own list of distractions continue to grow.

"Average" is a synonym for "distracted". The most interesting people I've met understand that.

So here I go, looking to write a life story worthy of a read.

I better pick up the pace a bit...
